Ashwin Aravind

I work where learning, optimization and control meet — designing scalable, robust algorithms for autonomous systems that must act reliably under uncertainty.

Research

I am a researcher at Fujitsu Research, Japan. I completed my M.Tech + PhD dual degree in Systems and Control Engineering at IIT Bombay, advised by Prof. Debasish Chatterjee and in collaboration with Prof. Ashish Cherukuri (University of Groningen).

My PhD focused on tractable algorithms for convex semi-infinite programs — problems that arise naturally in robust and distributionally robust control — with both centralized and distributed methods suited to decentralized implementation. I have also worked on learning-based control for systems with uncertain dynamics, including a cross-apprenticeship learning framework and the use of Moreau envelopes to bridge model-based and model-free reinforcement learning.

Looking ahead, I'm interested in real-time optimization and learning-based controllers for cooperative robot teams, autonomous vehicles and intelligent infrastructure: methods grounded in rigorous theory that are also computationally viable in the real world. This work has been enriched by research visits to Rice University, Kyoto University and Fujitsu.
